Set the right expectations
Moroccan bath is special because it originates from ancient Moroccan culture that highlighted the need for maintaining the cleanliness of body and mind before engaging in any religious ritual.
The vision has undergone a sea change over time. Today, the Moroccan bath is part of health, wellness, and beauty treatment packages.
The traditional bath spa treatment and massage that gained global popularity offers a wide range of health and healing benefits besides promoting skin care.
Today, bathing sessions are part of beauty treatments as it exfoliates the skin and removes dead
skin cells while flushing out toxins from the body through the cleansed pores of the skin.
Preparing for the hammam experience
Once inside the hammam, get ready to undress. Separate changing rooms are available for men and women. Men can get down to their underwear, boxers, or swim shorts while women can dress in bikini bottoms, and underwear or remain completely nude. Now, you are ready for the session and arrive at the room as directed by the therapist of the salon ready to lie down on the scrub-down table or a bathtub, depending on the setting of the salon.
You are now ready for the session.
Going through the session
Step-1 – As you lie down on the table completely relaxed, the therapist starts applying the black Moroccan soap and covers the entire body from head to toe. The soap is a mixture of olive oil and natural soap. Lie down for about 5 minutes or slightly more in that state after which the therapist washes away the soap layer with warm water.
Step 2 – The therapist begins the exfoliation process by scrubbing your body while wearing a special pair of soft gloves or kees that have an abrasive surface similar to soft sandpaper. The process removes dead skin cells effectively.
Step 3 – On completing the exfoliation process, the therapist rinses your body thoroughly including hair shampoo. The therapist then applies a typical Moroccan clay product, a mixture of clay and rose water, to smother your body, face, and hair and facilitate deep cleaning.
Your skin and hair turn soft, supple, and shiny after rinsing the clay mask with warm water.
Insights gained from the above should make you ready to experience the Moroccan Bath. However, be careful not to carry anything valuable to the beauty salon as leaving these in the changing room might be risky, despite an attendant keeping watch.
